Were there actually shields that warriors floated on to cross a body of water?

someone told me that pict warriors did this but as much as I looked up, I couldn't find any info on them using shields as floating devices other then Units on a pc game called Stronghold. Maybe that's where that other person heard about it from. Any info or links would help, thanks.
