I like the iPad 2, just don't want to spend the money.?

I want to get the iPad 2 as a note taking device for in class. I really like the fact that you have all your notes digitally with you and also your books, but I just can't justify spending $500 on something that isn't a "laptop". I was just hoping for a little input. I have really bad OCD when it comes to school. All the things I would carry around (6 binders, 3 textbooks, etc.) were messing up my back and shoulders. So if someone could give me some ideas that'd be great. Thanks!
