Mole traps killing the mole?

I had a mole in the garden so I stomped the hole thinking it wouldn't be back well it came back times ten so I bought a trap followed the directions on the trap and the mole moved and I did the same to the hole then he moved again every time I smash the hole twice the mole leaves and the trap never kills him the direction say smash the hole if it comes back its an active hole so smash part of it and set the trap over the smashed part so is the mole just a genius or am I doing something wrong
