How to boot computer?

Hi I'm not sure what i did to my computer but when you turn it on it says to to reboot and select lproper boot decive or insert boot media in selected boot device...I have a sony vaio its 7 years old window xp..Ive tried putting in the system recovery disk but it tells me it cant find the partion...thanks for all the helpl
